BREAKBEAT
ERA
Hype, Newcastle
student Union! The time? 23rd of September! The Gig? Roni Size + Breakbeat
Era! Wicked! After stepping through the doors the first thing that struck
me was how rammed the place was! (shoulder to shoulder) However, this was
to be expected as not only had the students just returned, but their wallets
were full too! (smell those grant cheques) The ladies were out in force
but that wasn’t what I was here for (my girl wouldn’t be too pleased either!)
So then, first up were a couple of local guys called BASS ODYSSEY who did
their live pa thing, and it sounded all right, and was successful in building
a vibe and wetting everyone's appetites.
After
about 40 mins the lads djed for a while and the set consisted of new realises
like Ed Rush / Optical - Gas mask and other dark rollers After this came
Roni's band BREAKBEAT ERA playing live (But without Roni or Die present?).Lennie
Laws's vocals were excellent and the whole set was tight, playing most
of the songs from the new album (Bullet-proof, Ultra Obscene, Our Disease
Tera!), but it was Rancid that did it for me! As the "doop doop dee doo
dee doo day" introduction started my dancing got wilder and I ended up
punching a ceiling tile down in my frenzy! (sorry Newcastle union! ~S~).
Next
on the Agenda was the sole reason I went, RONI SIZE on the 1s and 2s
alongside the MC DYNAMITE! it was roadblock time, and he ensued to blow
the doors clean off their hinges with a set of dubplates alongside classics!
Starting off with his own "our disease tera" the crowd were instantly up
for it! Working his way through Dillinja - Nasty ways, Bad Company - the
pulse , Dillinja - "Bongo Riff" etc but the highlight of his set was Bad
Company + Trace's - "Sneakers" which got rewound to the crowds delight
Mc Dynamite did his thing which was all right, but he sounded the same
as when I last heard him 2 years ago, and I much prefer hearing the lyrical
dexterity of such mcs as GQ and Skibadee as the man. But in all fairness
he helped the "not clued up on drum and bass" students enjoy the ride!!
Finally,
it was time for some local talent again, and TURBULENCE DJ's PHOBIA and
PIPER took to the decks, once again playing a set of typical dark rollers
All in all the night was brilliant, the highlight definitely being Roni
Djing (id pay the price to hear Nasty Ways again), and the crowd went home
pleased (as punch!). However, I felt that the local boys could have represented
a bit better with their skills! 2 hours of dark hardstep just isn't enough!
Its repetitive and mundane, and I feel that the crowd would have liked
a little liquid funk within the sets. Aiiight then.
