WRISK & MACKIE INTERVIEW
|
What can we say about Gain Recordings? What can we not say about Gain? They are one label out on a mission, their mission, to take the scene by storm as quickly as possible. These guys are certainly looking to become the label version of the great Bad Company, Gain have risen and set their aims high, as this year alone they have shot into the scene with an abundance of talent and great tunes. What with the success of Wrisk's "Rabbit EP" and with 3 releases under his belt and collaborations with stable mate Mackie, the duo have now firmly established their own label Gain. So who better to get a lowdown on the label, than the duo themselves, enjoy:
BAZZY B - Q1 - HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED IN THE SCENE? WHAT INFLUENCED YOU INTO BECOMING INVOLVED IN DRUM AND BASS?
WRISK - I had been following it as breakbeat/hardcore before it evolved
into
drum and bass and liked the way it was headed. i got into the mixing
when
people started buying decks when we were back at school and guess it
all
stemed from that.....
MACKIE - I Was at college back in 88, into ska and stuff, and then all of
a
sudden ACID HOUSE swept the nation, and that was that, got into dance
music
and followed it into what it is today.
BAZZY B - Q2 - YOU STARTED OFF AS A DJ, WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST RESIDENCY AND WHAT CAME NEXT?
WRISK - Never really done the regular club thing its usually been one
offs
ie ministry, chunnel etc The main entertaining was done through the
underground, we run a sound system that gets dusted off and run red
during
the summer months mainly around brighton - some of those free parties
end up
like small festivals, totally different vibe to the club thing...
MACKIE - Started out at a night called Paranoid, small club in the
South
East that held about 400. Then started up with a free party crew IDSS,
check
em out at http://www.idss.co.uk. On to Infection at the Isobar, a few
nights
with the Unsound System, Pace promotions at the chunnel club and we
took
over the back room at the Ministry of Sound for our sins!
BAZZY B - Q3 - WHAT HAS BEEN THE PROUDEST/HAPPIEST MOMENT FOR YOU BEHIND THE DECKS? AND WHAT HAS BEEN THE WORST?
WRISK - One of the highlights has to be at ministry last year in the
backroom doing a student night. I was up after a garage set and I had
my
doubts as to how it would work, dropped 'snapshot' to start and the
place
blew up and couldnt do a thing wrong all nite. smashing.
MACKIE - 6am in a field in Gatwick, absolutely trollied dropping Kylie
minogue by mistake! Laugh, I nearly shat myself.
BAZZY B - Q4 - AFTER DJING FOR 10 YEARS, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE A BREAK AND CONCENTRATE ON PRODUCING?
WRISK - At the moment its alot down to money going on studio gear that
I
would usually do on vinyl, but now the tunes are starting to pay us
back I
be back on the case real soon.......
MACKIE - Seems to be the only way to make a name for yourself, there's
no up
and coming dj's in the scene that have made it purely on mixing skills
alone - is there?

BAZZY B - Q5 - YOU NOW HAVE THREE RELEASES ON GAIN RECORDINGS, WHAT WAS THE IDEA BEHIND IT ALL?
WRISK - Gain is a project that was started by mackie and myself with
the
idea of cutting the crap of trying to get 'signed' to a label by doing
it
ourselves, it has been quite costly but is all worth it when you
realise all
the people that are buying the records.
MACKIE - I am Gain!
WRISK - Cheeky Fuck!
BAZZY B - Q6 -
GAIN ARE RELATIVELY NEW TO THE SCENE, WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THEM OVER THE NEXT YEAR?
WRISK - Releases have been a bit slow initially because of the money
thing ,
but now were pretty much there in that department we should be putting
alot
more out there and also introducing some new producers to the scene.
BAZZY B - Q7 - WHAT STYLES ARE THEY REPRESENTIN?
WRISK - Personally at the moment im steering away from the growling
dark
bass thing, not because im not into it but just down to me being more
kind
of funk driven when im in the studio, I like to do things a bit
different
with my sound.
MACKIE - Dancing and Prancing Style! Not into the style thing, if it
drops
its a tune, simple as that, i'll listen to it regardless. I think
there's
enough musically snobbery as it is.
BAZZY B - Q8 - WHO SHOULD WE BE LOOKING OUT FOR AT GAIN RECORDINGS OTHER THAN YOURSELF?
WRISK - apart from mackie obviously , mu ma who appears on Gain 003
and we
are hoping to hook up with cappo regime, spree and solarise.
MACKIE - Could be a surprise appearance from DJ Honk (Pace).
BAZZY B - Q9 - YOUR RABBIT E.P WAS A SURPRISE HIT IN THE SCENE, WHAT ELSE CAN WE EXPECT FROM YOU OVER THE NEXT YEAR?
WRISK - The sound is definately going to progress with the size of the
studio which I am adding to all the time much to the distress of my
bank
manager.
MACKIE - We are hoping to add to our rosta of artists, as well as those
mentioned above we are looking out for a vocalist, a few things in the
pipeline but nothing definate.
BAZZY B - Q10 - CAN WE CATCH YOU BACK BEHIND THE DECKS? OR CAN WE CATCH YOU PLAYING ONE OFF GIGS ANYWHERE SOON?
WRISK - Summers here and the bass bins have already been moving the air
in a
big way so we will be down the beaches and valleys of brighton with all
the
die hard nutters for the next few months.
MACKIE - For sure. Would like to get into Europe very soon, and
Ireland.
BAZZY B - CHEERS FOR THE INTERVIEW LADS, IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?
WRISK - I want to buy a dog and call it Steven.
MACKIE - Shouts to ; Mark at Vinyl Distribution, Kat and Spencer at
Assured
Manufacturing, her in doors (Rosie) and my Mum!
