DJ HYPE
/ MC GQ
Hype, coming back
to Denver within 7 months of his first appearance in the USA, threw down
an awesome set, definitely converting more Colorado heads to the True Playaz
faith. He started off with a new remix of 'Original Nuttah' that I have
never heard before(not the Bambaata/Pulse one either), and then into a
few rollers and amen rollers which acted as a pallet cleanser to the crowd
from just hearing DJ Flux from San Francisco. From there, he played
the Total Science remix of 'Champion Sound'(instant rewind, in fact it
was almost rewound twice.) then busted into some hip hop flavored jungle(note:
this is not jungle flavored hip hop.)
GQ had intervened
on the microphone with a lot of soul and lyrics that carried more of an
emotional quality to them - PROPER. Hype dropped some phat, PHAT scratches
and tricks along with the delay and filtered with other effects.
I think the audience really took to his jungle trick skills. He then
proceeded to his mix of 'Heads High' which had everyone in the place singing
right along with him!(I don't think he expected such a response form the
crowd.)
As Hype wound
down his set, Kenny Ken started to get prepared for his turn on the decks.
Hype cut the sound and let GQ introduce his last track for the night.
As the track started to play, Kenny Ken accidentally bumped into the needle
causing the same scratch sound that is in 'Champion Sound'! With
an embarrassed look on his face Kenny started the track over again, and
proceeded to get a couple of records ready. Hype's last track ended,
the crowd roared with approval, and that was that.
I'm not sure which
track Kenny Ken had started off with but he mixed it into 'Phantom Force'
at which point the turntable on his right hand side became very unstable.
The needle kept skipping and he had to improvise on at least the next 2
or 3 tracks. I can't tell you more on Kenny's set, because due to
another situation, I had to leave the party. Kenny Ken is a Colorado
favorite so I'm sure nobody was too upset by the technical difficulties
he experienced at first. Much respect goes
out to Hype, Kenny Ken, GQ, and Fearless for dropping the true jungle science
on the Rocky Mountain Massive! THANK YOU.
Personal note:
Aphrodite, the Groove Armada, and the Jungle Brothers also played the same
night as Hype and Kenny Ken. So far I have not heard anything about that
show, so I don't think we really missed anything(not that I would have
went anyway, but that's MY opinion). In fact, personally I'm glad
they were in town to keep all of the perpetrators away. Upcoming events
in Denver include: Goldie, LTJ Bukem, Blame, Rantoul, and others. I'll
keep you all posted!
RESPECT
